Curlew joined the 5th LCS at Harwich on completion, and then, in 1919, the 1st LCS with the Atlantic Fleet, where she remained only a year before recommissioning for the 5th Cruiser Squadron on 27 April 1920 and going out to China. On 24 November 1922 she recommissioned for the 8th LCS on the America and West Indies Station, eventually returning home to reserve in 1927. She subsequently served with the 3rd Cruiser Squadron (November 1929 to August 1933), and with the 1st Cruiser Squadron until October 1936. After a period in reserve the ship was selected for one of the prototype conversions to an AA cruiser in 1935. She was in dockyard hands at the outbreak of war in 1939, then served with the Home Fleet until she was sunk by aircraft of KGIO0 off Skaanland on 26 May 1940, during the Norwegian campaign.
